SPROUT, SPROUT, LET IT ALL OUT

March is here. The days are getting longer, winter's grueling chill is receding, and spring is popping to life. Here in the midwest, the first signs of spring growth are starting to sprout. It may be partially hidden beneath the fallen leaves of last autumn, but the first growth has sprouted. And that goes the same for the 2012 fruitman chili crops. It has been five weeks since the seeds were planted in the miniature greenhouse and all but two varieties (Jamaican Chocolate Habanero & Fatalii) have sprouted...READ MORE

Wow, can you believe it's almost the end of February already? Where does the time go? That's the life of a farmer, I guess. This year's chili seeds have been sprouting up the last two weeks, and there is not much else to do on the farm until mid-late April when the seedlings can be planted outdoors. What better time for another installment of Farmer Fridays, a time to kick back and relax after a long hard week on the farm. Featuring great recipes, articles, links and hilarious videos of ALL THINGS SPICY.READ MORE

Things are moving quite smoothly here in the beginning stages of the 2012 growing season. Fruitman's chili farm's seedlings are starting to sprout after just eleven days! How's that for getting a jump on the season? The Serranos, Paper Lanterns, Lemon Drops and Ring of Fires have all shot up with a vengeance, and hopefully soon some of the other varieties will show their colors as well. Once all the seed pots have sprouted I can remove the plastic cover from the miniature greenhouse, and then the chilies can get some good fresh (indoor) air...READ MORE

It's been almost two weeks since this season's seed crops were planted, and the seed pots are enjoying their humid incubation period. The trusty miniature greenhouse is working just as expected, as it does every year. It pretty much takes care of itself, other than having to periodically adding a little water to keep the soil and air just slightly damp. If any other farmers out there are using this same method for seed starting, you should see a slight bit of condensation on the glass; a good indication that the miniature greenhouse is creating an OPTIMAL SEEDLING ENVIRONMENT...READ MORE

Now that it's mid-winter, it's time to shake off that winter chill and fire up Fruitman's Chili Farm again. Just because it's February doesn't mean a farmer doesn't have work to do. That is, if you are starting your crop from seed. Seeds need time to grow into seedlings which can withstand spring's wavering weather of wind, cold, and rain. In the midwest, mid-winter is the best time to get those chili seeds started. A little bit of work now will give your seed crops the best chance at surviving the tumultuous spring, not to mention that it will also give them a better chancing at blossoming earlier...READ MORE

Happy Holidays from fruitman farms! Now that the weather has turned cold and the crops are all in, that doesn't mean all is quiet here on the farm. A great deal of work still remains, even throughout the winter months. Why just a few days ago I put the wraps on the plans for next year's crops. Just waiting now for my shipment of seeds to arrive for indoor planting in mid January. A full month earlier than last year's seedlings. But before I even started worrying about next year's chilies, I wanted to finish up the enormous amount of work left from this past season's chili harvest...READ MORE
